Deck Tips

Can I power wash my cedar deck?

cedar deck cleaningWhile you can power wash your deck, we don’t recommend it. It’s very difficult to find the right amount of pressure to apply to a cedar deck, and the amount of time saved by using a pressure washer likely won’t make up for the damage you risk doing to your deck by stripping or damaging it with too much pressure.

It is a good practice, to clean your  cedar deck once a year, in the spring, to remove dirt, mildew and other forms of discoloration. Yearly cleaning will ensure that the deck looks nice as well as prolonging the life of the protective coating. Deck cleaning is an annual chore for many. Deck sanding and cleaning happens to those people who choose to use wood-damaging pressure washers. Cedar deck cleaning and sealing is now easy with oxygen bleach and a special epoxy sealer for cedar.

A deck, which is constantly exposed to natural elements like sunlight, frost and rain, requires regular maintenance. Regular cleaning can prevent buildup of mold, algae and dirt. Maintenance is more vital in case of wooden decks, which are more prone to rot and other problems

Cedar Deck Winterization: Cleaning, Staining, and Sealing
1.Power wash. Be careful to keep the power washer on a low setting – too much pressure can damage your cedar deck.
2.Sand rough spots. Stains will come away with extra rounds of power washing and sanding.
3.Allow deck to dry.
4.Stain and reseal.
